Our 10th Year and Counting......
This month marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Retail Works as a boutique specialty consulting firm focused on the Canadian retail industry. From the very first client phone call seeking advice and support to help grow their business, Retail Works has been personally rewarding and a wonderful learning experience. After twenty-five plus years living the "corporate" life, the transition into an entrepreneurial endeavor has allowed me to work with 98 different companies, organizations and institutions and literally thousands of people.
The scope of customized work-recruitment, executive search, strategic planning, training & development, coaching & mentoring, direct marketing initiatives, product development, shopping center merchandising and leasing has been as varied as the types of clients that I have had the pleasure of working with. The full spectrum of clients has included all types of retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, shopping centre owners, hospitals, construction firms and marketing & media companies. They have all generously allowed us the opportunity to work with them and to reach this milestone of ten years. Given the fact that only 9% of small businesses have a chance of survival to the ten year mark, I am thrilled that we are part of this small minority.

The last ten years has seen hyper change in the business arena, due almost entirely to the speed of technology. Technology has transformed and enhanced the retail experience for many consumers and also how retailers conduct business through various channels. The search for human capital and talent has been radically changed with the use of social media-LinkedIn (also celebrating their 10th anniversary) and Facebook in particular. More and more companies are attempting to utilize these networks as a low cost alternative to third party sources to fulfill their manpower and expertise needs. The drawback to social media sourcing is that a low percentage of members are considered to be active users or are looking for employment opportunities. Similarly, employers may not be actively looking to add to their talent pool at any given time but are always interested in meeting potential future employees for either an additional position or a strategic change.

Retail Works is launching a solution for both employers and active candidates in what we are calling a "reversed engineered product". Talent Showcase can become part of any company's talent sourcing strategy. And for those seeking new opportunities it has the ability to present their profiles and experience to a wide range of employers. Here's how it works. On a monthly basis, a blind profile of a senior retail manager or executive will be sent out to a select list of participating company executives or human resources heads. It will be emailed directly under the subject line of "Talent Showcase". Those companies that are interested in learning more about the candidate, can contact us and we will seek approval from the candidate to share their full resume on a strictly confidential basis. We connect both parties to begin the process of an employee/employer "match".
